Ekiben – the perfect Bentō box

If you travel on a shinkansen do not forget to buy a bentō box called ekiben えべん in Japanese. You can purchase them on the shinkansen platforms close to the tracks or in the shops in the JR Japan Rail areas before accessing the tracks. It is part of the fun of traveling with the fast train. I always purchase an ekiben and something to drink.

There are a lot of varieties, so make sure to plan in some time for shopping before accessing the tracks. Some are served cold, some hot. These shops also carry a wide variety of sweets to purchase as omiyage おみやげ gifts to bring to family or friends or to each yourself of course.

Bentō box for dinner on the Shinkansen at around 350km. Nice!!

4 trips in 3 years

This totally qualifies for an established Japan addict. You might think that this is totally crazy but I am going to tell you that it is not. I have been dreaming of traveling to Japan since my teenage years. That’s 30 years ago and I have waited way too long. My first trip on the Fall 2016 was a solo trip from Kyoto via Hakone to Tokyo. My second one to the same destinations only 6 months later in Spring 2017 with my brother Alex. In Spring 2018 and 2019 I traveled together with my son Frédéric. We traveled with our backpacks from Kyoto down to Miyajima the first year and from Nagoya, via Tokyo, Nikko, Yokohama, Kamakura, Kyoto, Yoshino to Osaka the second year. Another trip is planned for Fall 2019 and a huge adventure (details will be revealed later) for September-October 2020.
